Reads scans and photos
Snap a picture of an ID card or drop in a scanned PDF. Cogdex reads the text, including the machine-readable lines at the bottom of a passport.
Private beta for Mac
A private AI assistant for the records you can never find when you need them: passports, insurance cards, medical and tax papers. Ask in plain English and get the answer from your own files. Everything runs on your Mac.

What it does
Snap a picture of an ID card or drop in a scanned PDF. Cogdex reads the text, including the machine-readable lines at the bottom of a passport.
Ask when something expires, how old someone is, or when you last travelled. Dates are worked out exactly, not guessed.
A single fact comes back as one sentence. Lists, like trips or renewals, come back as a neat table you can scan at a glance.
"Insurance number" could mean health or car. Cogdex asks which one you mean instead of picking the wrong card.
Every answer names the file it came from, so you can check it. If the answer isn't in your files, it says so rather than making one up.
How it remembers
You remember some things by looking them up, and others because someone told you. Cogdex works the same way.
Document memory
Drop documents, PDFs and photos into your Cogdex folder. Cogdex reads every page and, when you ask a question, finds the passage that answers it, even if you use different words than the document does.
Semantic search over on-device embeddings
Fact memory
Some things aren't written down anywhere. Tell Cogdex once, like your blood type or your doctor's name, and it remembers exactly what you said.
Episodic facts with exact recall
Expiry alerts
Cogdex spots the expiry dates in your passports, visas and licences and reminds you well ahead of time: six months, three months, one month and one week before each date.
Private by design
Most AI assistants send your questions to a data centre. Cogdex can't: the AI model, the search index and your documents all live on your Mac. After a one-time setup download, you can turn the Wi-Fi off and it keeps working.
An open Llama model runs on your Mac's own chip. No API keys and no cloud calls.
Documents are split into passages and embedded into a SQLite file in your Library folder.
Meaning-based and keyword search are blended, so exact numbers and loose wording both land.
Delete a chat, a file or everything Cogdex knows from Setup, in one step. Export what it remembers first if you like.
Get started
One app. On first launch it sets itself up with a one-time download of a few gigabytes.
Drop documents, PDFs and photos into your Cogdex folder. It reads them automatically.
"Which of our passports expire this year?" "What's my blood type?" Answers in seconds.
Questions
Only once, to download the AI model during setup. After that Cogdex works completely offline, and your questions and documents never leave your Mac.
Macs with Apple silicon (M1 or newer) running macOS 12 or later, with 8 GB of memory and about 5 GB of free space. Intel Macs are not supported.
It can, as any AI can. That's why every answer shows the file it came from, ID numbers are shown next to the line of the document they were read from, dates are calculated exactly rather than guessed, and Cogdex says "I don't know" when the answer isn't in your files. Check anything important against the original document.
Your files stay in your Cogdex folder. Cogdex keeps the text it reads from them, and what you ask it to remember, in a database in your Library folder. Nothing is copied to a server, because there is no server.
Cogdex does not encrypt that database itself. It is protected by your Mac's login and by FileVault if you have it turned on, and Time Machine backs it up like any other file.
In Cogdex, go to Setup and choose Delete all Cogdex data. Then drag the app to the Trash. To also remove the private engine and models, follow the uninstall steps.
Cogdex is free during the beta.
I'm inviting a small group of early testers. You'll get the Mac app before anyone else and a direct line to me for feedback.
