Version 1 · Effective 3 November 2026
Terms of Use
The short version: Cogdex is a free beta that runs on your Mac. Your documents stay with you, answers can be wrong, and you are responsible for checking anything that matters.
1. Accepting these terms
These terms cover the Cogdex app for macOS and this website. By downloading, installing or using Cogdex you agree to them. Cogdex asks you to accept them when it first opens. If you do not agree, do not use it, and remove it using the uninstall steps.
2. A beta, provided as is
Cogdex is an early test version. It is free during the beta and may change, break or stop being available at any time. It is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement, to the fullest extent the law allows.
3. Using Cogdex
You may install Cogdex on Macs you own or control and use it for your own documents and your household's. Only add documents you have the right to use. Do not use Cogdex to break the law, to process other people's personal information without their permission, or in ways the model licences below forbid. Do not resell, redistribute or reverse engineer the app except where the law allows it.
4. Your data
- Cogdex reads the files you put in your Cogdex folder and keeps their text, your chats and what you ask it to remember in a database on your Mac. There is no Cogdex account and no Cogdex server. Your documents, questions and answers are not sent anywhere.
- Cogdex connects to the internet during setup to download its engine and AI models. After that it works offline.
- Cogdex does not encrypt its database itself. It relies on your Mac's login and on FileVault, if you turn it on. Time Machine and other backup tools copy it like any other file. Keeping your Mac, your account and your backups secure is your responsibility.
- You can export what Cogdex remembers and delete all of its data from Setup at any time. Deleting Cogdex data does not touch your original files.
- If you send us diagnostics or feedback, you choose what to include. Diagnostics are copied to your clipboard for you to review first; Cogdex never sends them itself.
5. Answers can be wrong
Cogdex uses a small AI model that runs on your Mac. It can misread a scan, mix up documents or state something incorrect with confidence. It shows the file each answer came from so you can check it.
- Always check the original document before relying on a number, a date or a detail, especially for travel, visas and immigration, insurance, tax, medical or legal matters.
- Cogdex is not legal, medical, financial, tax or immigration advice, and it is not a substitute for official records or for verifying identity.
- Expiry reminders are a convenience. They can be late, wrong or missing, for example if a date was not read correctly or the Mac was off. Do not rely on them alone for deadlines.
6. Limits on liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, the makers of Cogdex are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, or for loss of data, documents, travel, money or opportunity, arising from your use of Cogdex or reliance on its answers or reminders. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid for Cogdex, which during the beta is nothing. Some places do not allow these limits, so they apply to you only as far as the law permits.
7. Open models and software inside Cogdex
Built with Llama. Cogdex answers questions with Meta's Llama 3.2 model. Llama 3.2 is licensed under the Llama 3.2 Community License, Copyright © Meta Platforms, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Your use of the model must follow Meta's Acceptable Use Policy.
Cogdex also includes or downloads these components, each under its own licence:
- Ollama, which runs the models (MIT License)
- nomic-embed-text, which powers search (Apache License 2.0)
- SQLite (public domain) and sqlite-vec (MIT or Apache 2.0)
- Tauri, the app shell (MIT or Apache 2.0)
Nothing in these terms limits your rights under those licences.
8. Changes and ending
These terms may be updated as Cogdex develops. The version and date at the top of this page will change, and Cogdex will ask you to accept a new version before you keep using it. You can stop using Cogdex at any time by deleting its data and the app. If you break these terms, your permission to use Cogdex ends.
